Tips on hiring a contractor
Hiring a professional contractor is a very big decision. You’re investing a lot of your hard-earned money into improving your home, which is likely the biggest investment of your lifetime.
It can be difficult to determine which contractor to hire: Who has the best price? Who is the most trustworthy? Who does the best work? Who is the most professional? Here are some suggestions on how to hire the best contractor for your needs:
Ask people you trust which contractors they have used, and why they were happy with them. If you don’t have references from people you trust, it’s important that you do your homework before you hire any contractor.
Are they members of the Better Business Bureau? What is their rating? Are they licensed and properly insured?
All contractors in Pennsylvania are required to have an HIC (Home Improvement Contractor) number registered with the state. This number should be visible on a company’s marketing materials and can be researched online for verification.
Also, never hire a contractor that cannot provide proof of insurance. If a company is not properly insured, move on to the next one.
Properly insured contractors may charge a little more for their work, but it’s worth it for your protection. You can ask a paving contractor for references of work they’ve done locally, which allows you to look at the work they’ve done nearby.
Also, trust your instincts. If something seems too good to be true, it probably is.
