Churchville Nature Center announces outstanding volunteer awards

Churchville Nature Center (CNC) has a long tradition of recognizing volunteers who go above and beyond to offer their time and talents to making a difference in education, conservation and preservation. This year was exceptional in that the Center had multiple volunteers who contributed in major ways assisting in one of more departments.

David E. Spencer, of Langhorne, received the Volunteer of the Year Award for devoting 380+ hours outdoors improving the trails, gardens and grounds. David also completed a beekeeping class to restore and improve the honeybee hives adjacent to the trails and gardens.

Providing healthy habitat to help pollinators, such as honeybees survive and thrive is part of the conservation mission at CNC.  Recently retired from a small business, Dave has volunteered with the nature center since fall 2021, often two or three days a week outdoors, and at the front desk assisting visitors and families.

Victoria Moreira, of Warrington, received the Volunteer Achievement Award for her careful and thoughtful assistance with animal care, butterfly research and documentation.

A graduate of Delaware Valley University and recently accepted into a master’s degree program at West Chester University, Victoria started volunteering in spring 2021, which blossomed into environmental education and animal care where she demonstrated her deep knowledge of biology.

Gloria Tafel, of Doylestown, also received a Volunteer Achievement Award for over 200 hours of service in the butterfly house and gardens. Gloria has been volunteering with the Center for close to two years. She is consistent and enthusiastic in her efforts to improve pollinator habitat at the Center.

All the awardees received framed certificates and gift cards to either the Harvest Seasonal Grill or Churchville Inn. The Friends of Churchville Nature Center appreciates the generosity of these local restaurants for recognizing this trio of incredible volunteers.

The awards were announced at the holiday staff luncheon on December 14th. To learn more about volunteer opportunities visit the CNC website at https://www.churchvillenaturecenter.org/?job=display_item&featuretype=userpage&wrapper=normal&id=13&page_title=Volunteering.
