    Friends Annual Canal Walk returns

The Friends of the Delaware Canal have embarked on their 35th Annual Canal Walk, which began on September 30th. Nearly the entire length of the Canal will be explored over four consecutive Saturdays in October.

This year’s Walk will be a bit shorter than the traditional 58.9 miles because of some towpath closures along the way. However, hikers will have the same opportunity to learn about the area’s past and future while taking in the autumn scenery along the Canal and Delaware River.

Jeff Connell, from the Friends, will lead the group with stories about the Canal, highlighting sites of historic and environmental significance along the way. The following dates lay out the hiking agenda:

    • October 7th – Morrisville Motel to Buckstone Farm; 9.81 miles, subject to change due to towpath closures.
    • October 14th – Buckstone Farm to Virginia Forrest Recreation Area; 9.85 miles, subject to change due to towpath closures.
    • October 21st – Smithtown Bridge 2 to Park Office; 7.81 miles, subject to change due to towpath closures.
    • October 28th – Ringing Rocks Trailhead to Mueller’s Store; 6.44 miles.
    • November 4th – Rain date.

The Walks begin at 9:00am on each Saturday. You are invited to walk on any or all of the dates.

Bring a light lunch and beverage each day and wear comfortable shoes. Transportation back to the starting point will be accomplished by carpooling.

If you wish to park at the end point in the morning, please let the Friends know, and arrive by 8:15. They will provide carpooling to the starting point.

The Walks are free and donations are welcome. You can register online at www.fodc.org/event/canal-walk-2023/.

Any changes due to road closures will be updated on the website.
