Asphalt is the most durable and flexible material used for driveways. The lifespan of a driveway will depend on the inches of blacktop, the quality of the installation and the consistency of maintenance.
When an overlay is placed on top of an existing driveway, approximately 2-3 inches of asphalt is put down. An overlay will have a lifespan of approximately 15+ years.
A repave or new pave will get approximately 3-4 inches of asphalt and will last approximately 15-30 years, depending on the application. Generally a new driveway will get two layers of asphalt.
Another advantage to asphalt is that the maintenance is relatively easy and inexpensive requiring a coat of sealer every few years. In addition to enhancing curb appeal, a new driveway will also add value to your home and property.
Also worth noting is that asphalt is 100% recyclable making it environmentally friendly and sustainable. When asphalt is replaced, it can be recycled into shingles or pavement with minimal modification.
