Council Rock South celebrates 10 years of excellence!

by Amanda Molinari, senior, Council Rock South High School

Ten years ago, Council Rock School District added another high school to support their ever-growing student population. In late September, 2002, Council Rock High School South opened its brand new doors to the students of the district.

Since then, CR South has had thousands of exceptional graduates walk through its halls and out its doors to face their bright futures. This year, South is celebrating its tenth anniversary with many events, bigger and better than ever.

Already in October, senior class officers, Ryan Walter, Dallas Alves, Sophia Kahn, Patrice McFillin and Marie Grutza, buried a time capsule in South’s own front yard! The capsule contained some of South’s favorite memories, including t-shirts, yearbooks and pictures.

On October 12th, South presented guest speaker, author and comedian, Matt Bellus, to the entire high school to speak about life’s natural highs. By sharing his own high school experiences with South students, Mr. Bellus helped them realize that there are other ways to be happy and have fun without the use of drugs and alcohol.

Instead of lecturing kids on addiction, he simply made them laugh about it.

“I looked around the room and there wasn’t one person who wasn’t laughing,” Chandler Worton, a senior at South exclaimed. “It felt like we were talking to our friends, rather than an adult; we laughed the whole time.”

Not only did he speak to the students and make them laugh, he also got them involved in his performance. Some students from the audience volunteered and were asked on stage to participate in various exercises.

During the short but sweet assembly, Mr. Bellus brought South together as a family though their shared laughs and experiences. After the assembly, CR South even splurged for a celebratory cake big enough to feed its two thousand students.

Each student was able to have his/her choice of cake, chocolate or vanilla, free of charge, during his/her lunch.

Later in the school year on April 30th, 2013, South will hold its second prom for senior citizens. Planned, sponsored, and arranged by the senior student council, along with Mr. Moore’s philosophy and honors economics classes, the night is expected to be nothing less than perfection.

All senior citizens within the Council Rock School District are invited for the special night to remember in CR South’s cafeteria. The evening will include food, beverages, door prizes, live music and even special guests!

The only thing the prom-planners ask is to know who is attending ahead of time. For more information email Rick Moore at rmoore@crsd.org.

Congratulations on a successful 10 years, Council Rock South.

BBBSBC celebrates National Mentoring Month by honoring longtime match of 11 years

BBBSBC Craig Wright, of Furlong, and his Little Brother, John, 18, of Warminster, marked a milestone recently with the staff of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Bucks County (BBBSBC). The celebration, held at the BBBSBC office, honored their match of 11 years (one of the longest matches in the Bucks County agency’s history) with certificates of recognition.

With January being National Mentoring Month, the timing of the event couldn’t have been better. Craig and John enjoyed the opportunity to reflect on all the fun they’ve had together over years, though John admitted that it wasn’t always like that at the start.

“I remember crying and saying I missed my mom the first time I met Craig,” said John, now a senior at William Tennant High School in Warminster. “I was only seven-years-old!”

The pair says that their favorite place to go back then was Happy Tymes Family Fun Center in Warrington, where they would bowl and play video games. Other activities the two have enjoyed include snowboarding and attending sporting events – 76ers, Flyers, Phantoms, and Eagles games, outings that were often made possible through tickets donated to Big Brothers Big Sisters.
