Journey with Shirley Lee Corsey, Executive Director of Gather Place Museum in historic Yardley Borough, to explore the vital role that Bucks County played in the Underground Railroad. Focusing on Yardley Borough and its early Quaker village establishment beside the Delaware River. This covert network, involving Quakers, free African Americans, Christian abolitionists and others, facilitated escapes north and as far as Canada. Corsey highlights the bravery of those like Harriet Tubman, who fled from the eastern shores of Maryland pursued by slave catchers. This presentation concludes with information about Lower Makefield Township’s Slate Cemetery, which commemorates African American Civil War veterans who are buried there, emphasizing their ongoing legacy of resilience and contributions to our nation’s history.
