Emotional stress and college no match for neurofeedback

submitted by Maria Di Donato DEd,BCN, PA Licensed Psychologist, PA/NJ Certified School Psychologist

Dolores (not her real name), a college student from Philadelphia, was struggling with anxiety and depression. Because these were interfering with her academic progress at college, she was very concerned. Much of the emotional difficulties were exacerbated by stress from being bullied as a child and family stressors at home.

She reported having a short attention span, feeling unmotivated, difficulty learning and remembering, often fidgeting with hands and feet, feeling driven, having difficulty with eye contact, moving excessively, and feeling on-the-go much of the time.  Sadness, irritability, withdrawing from family, intrusive thoughts and losing interest in things were also concerning to her.

Sleeping problems included difficulty falling asleep, waking up frequently, having restless sleep, and not getting enough sleep.  With all the stress she was experiencing, she also questioned her ability to succeed with the demands of a college curriculum.

At Dolores’ first appointment, she appeared very anxious and distracted. She had difficulty explaining and focusing in session. Self-Rating scales for anxiety and depression were significant for both. Treatment plan included neurofeedback training, counseling and autogenic training for stress management.

After the first session, she reported sleeping better, having more energy, feeling calm and relaxed and more awake and alert.  Dolores continues to make great progress with her treatment.  Her academic performance is excellent because she can focus more successfully on her school demands and this pleases her.  Her overall performance and achievements are rewarding to her. Neurofeedback was also able to focus on the ongoing effects of her childhood trauma and produce better emotional stability.

Overall, Dolores is making great progress and she holds great promise for a successful college experience and future success.

Neurofeedback is a form of biofeedback that helps to re-regulate brainwaves and in doing so restores better emotional and behavioral balance. Over time as the brain learns the new wave patterns new behaviors become more permanent.
