The family friendly musical, “Matilda,” lands at the newly renovated Newtown Theatre, located at 120 N State Street, Newtown, with selected performances from July 29th through August 7th. Newtown Arts Company brings to life the quirky children’s classic, written by Roald Dahl, adapted by Dennis Kelly with music and lyrics by Tim Minchin.
“Matilda” tells the tale of an extraordinary girl who dares to take a stand in an effort to change her destiny. A child prodigy, Matilda finds adventure in reading books while trying to escape a lack of family love at home. Challenged by her parents who cannot understand her love for literary delights, Matilda is treated as nothing more than a nuisance. A ray of hope shines thru when Matilda begins school. Her sweet teacher, Miss Honey recognizes her brilliance, and takes her under her wing. Enter one evil headmistress, Miss Trunchbull, who has an inner dislike for children. Trunchbull’s time is spent thinking of new punishments for the children who dare to “disobey” her rules. Matilda’s courage and clever ways allow her to discover and channel her super powers. The result, she begins to love life and the children in her school!
The production, under the direction of Mary Liz Ivins along with music director Susan den Outer, is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International. Matilda has a lively cast of forty, filled with crazy antics performed by children, teens and adults. Performance dates are Friday July 29th, Saturday July 30th, Thursday August 4th, Friday August 5th and Saturday August 6th at 7:30pm. There will also be a 2:00pm matinee on Sunday August 7th. Tickets are priced at $24 for the Main Floor and $21 for iconic balcony seats. To purchase tickets, visit www.newtownartscompany.com.
