The Six Healing Sounds

submitted by Acupuncture By George

Modern music therapists have rediscovered what many cultures and religions have known about music for centuries.

A theory called the Mozart Effect, for example, identifies types of music that may help mental development and general wellness.

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) includes a simple set of six sounds that claim to help maintain wellness.

No singing is required; just six simple sounds that are much like sound effects some of us experimented with as children.

The Six Healing Sounds can sound a bit strange to the Western ear.

It is a form of sound generation not related to singing that involves what are described as six ways of expelling the breath.

These sounds assist with wellness, including individual sounds to expel heat, to expel cold, to relieve tension, to release anger, to display malaise, or to regain equilibrium.

For the curious, the book Taoist Qigong for Health and Vitality by Sat Chuen Hon describes the method.

He also has a YouTube demonstration of the Six Healing Sounds Qigong that demonstrates it.

The Six Syllable Formula or Six Healing Sounds is said to reproduce vibrations associated with Traditional Chinese Medicine’s organ systems.

While all but one of the TCM organ systems sound like the physical organs of modern anatomy, they differ in that they are organ-based systems that are treated differently than allopathic medicine.

They include the Liver, Heart, Spleen (which includes the anatomical pancreas), Lung, Kidney, and the Triple Heater (the three major body cavities that surround the organs).

The Six Healing Sounds are sometimes suggested as wellness homework for stress by acupuncturists.
