Hummingbirds have ARRIVED…

If there’s one species of bird that wins the contest for “most desirable”… the one more people would like to see more than any other… it is without a doubt, hummingbirds.

Ruby-throated hummingbirds, jewels of the bird world, spend their winters in Central America and make their way across the Gulf of Mexico to destinations throughout North America…including right here in Bucks County.

Hummingbirds weigh less than an ounce (about 2.5 grams!) and arrive in our area around mid-April.

Males typically arrive first to set up territories followed a week later by the females.

Territory is an important factor because both males and females will defend it.

Fortunately, a backyard can be enough of a territory to host a nesting pair of hummingbirds.

They’re secretive about their nesting, but you can attract them to a feeder and enjoy their presence throughout the summer.

Wild Birds Unlimited has a variety of feeders in an attractive array of colors, materials, and styles to suit anyone’s taste.

As always, we recommend putting the feeder where you can see it; hummingbirds don’t linger long at feeders and you don’t want to miss it!

Those fleeting moments of a hovering green bird that “flaps” its wings more than 50 times per second is enough to take your breath away.

They’re courageous little things and if you’re sitting outside and still, they will gladly visit the feeder just a few feet from you!

WBU also offers accessories to keep your resident hummingbirds coming back for more; nectar mix, cleaning brushes, ant motes, swings, red shepherd’s hooks, and more!

Our expert staff can guide you on placement and care as well as ways to enhance your “bird garden” to the benefit of hummingbirds (start by eliminating pesticides as insects make up a sizable percentage of hummingbird diets!).
