On Monday, April 4th, The Middletown Township Board of Supervisors authorized an electricity supply agreement for the Township’s electrical accounts which includes 100% “green” energy from renewable resources. The new electrical contract will begin May 1st, 2023 and is specifically for Middletown Township accounts.
The new contract with Freepoint Energy Solutions will mean that all electricity used by the Township in its facilities and streetlights will come from renewable resources for the first time ever. The Township was able to restructure its current contract to minimize the cost of green energy.
By using renewable energy for Government operations, municipalities can be a significant contributor to decarbonizing the electricity system and tackling climate change, especially in emissions-heavy markets like the Northeast. Local governments play an integral role in growing the renewables market and further accelerating these trends to enable a clean energy future.
“Making the switch to green energy brings us one step closer toward our goal of a community that can sustain itself for generations to come” said Middletown Township Board Chairperson Mike Ksiazek. “We are proud to continue setting the standard for excellence in local government sustainability.”
The Middletown Township Board of Supervisors adopted the Climate Action Plan (CAP) on September 20th, 2021. The mission of the Middletown Township Local Climate Action Plan is to create an environmentally friendly future that improves the quality of life by promoting environmental sustainability to residents, businesses, and the community.
The CAP established a goal of changing the Township’s electrical supply to 100% green energy by 2030. Approval of this electric contract achieves this goal seven years early.
Pennsylvanians are encouraged to choose their energy supplier and shop for one that can offer the lowest price, best price or provide a specific service you want, such as green/renewable energy. PAPowerSwitch.org is a resource to shop the best rates from all electrical companies.
