3D printing may sound like a fantasy of the future, but it is happening NOW!
All you need is access to a computer, and you can become a 3D designer. See your visions come to life in three-dimensional form.
Star Labs 3D is here to make 3D printing and design more accessible to our community.
A’ishah Cook and Todd Olsen collaborate in building their own 3D printers, designing each piece, and printing the result.
Sumayah, A’ishah’s daughter, has seen her likeness come to life in 3D twice – once as a color-changing luminous bust, and the other as herself turned into a centaur.
“Your imagination is the limit,” says Todd. He works on the design end, which offers you the ability to order anything – a piece of art, toy, or part – that will become a real object, perfect for unique gifts and more.
While we’ll likely see 3D printers in many future homes, today this remains a unique technology. “[But] it’s not as difficult or as ‘industrial’ as many people think,” A’ishah explains.
One of the most exciting offerings at Star Labs 3D are “Mini Me’s,” where a digital scan of your body becomes a 3D version of yourself. You can also get creative and become a mythical creature, the way Sumayah did.
Or turn your photograph into a 3D postcard! There is so much you can do.
For those who have only seen 3D printing in movies, you may have a false impression of the time and detail that goes into creating 3D objects from a digital design.
Todd is eager to teach people how to design, while A’ishah looks forward to helping people build their own 3D printers. You can also order your own 3D printed designs at Star Labs 3D!
