Friends Village is a community for older adults in beautiful Newtown, PA. We’re guided by the science of healthy aging, and our Quaker values of simplicity, inclusion, dignity, and purposeful living. Our Mission is: “To foster purposeful living and social connectivity through a community of kindness.”
Research is clear that our social environment and engagement with life are key contributors to well-being. Daily social interactions and supportive relationships are important to maintaining cognitive, physical and emotional health.
Last year, during the most uncertain days of the pandemic we kept our residents safe, connected and supplied with what they needed. But not everyone was this fortunate. During COVID, more and more people began utilizing technology to stay connected to friends and loved ones. Older adults living alone, without the benefit of living in a community or the ability to join virtual gatherings, were more at-risk for social isolation.
That’s why Friends Village has partnered with Senior Planet to provide free technology courses to adults over the age of 60. Senior Planet is a program of OATS (Older Adult Technology Service), a charitable affiliate of AARP. Using Senior Planet’s curriculum, designed with older adult learners in mind, Friends Village aims to help those over the age of 60 build their technology skills to make new friendships, improve their health, save money, advocate in their communities, and thrive in the digital world.
Beginning in January, courses on Computer Essentials, Zoom, and Telemedicine will be offered. Some limited computer experience is suggested, but not required. Windows based personal computers will be utilized for teaching.
Classes are FREE and hosted at the Friends Village Styer campus at 331 Lower Dolington Road, Newtown, PA 18940. Visit www.fhvpa.org/senior-planet or call 215-968-3346 to learn more or to enroll in this exciting program.
