“From Skin Cancer to Psoriasis…Dermatologists have seen it all this year!”

As a practice remaining open through the pandemic, it’s been difficult to see many patients suffering from all aspects of the pandemic, including effects from the virus itself, as well as other hardships like school closures, shutdowns, and mental health issues.

Over the past year, we were able to diagnose and treat early malignancies such as melanoma, sarcoma, leiomyosarcoma, lymphoma, basal cell, and squamous cell carcinomas.

There are many growths on the skin that have the potential to metastasize and destroy local tissue.

It’s important to seek help if you notice unusual growths that bleed on their own or if you have a sore that doesn’t heal. We do prioritize these patients, especially when referred by their primary care physician.

Many patients were concerned about hair loss. The type of hair loss related to a stressful event or a health issue is called “telogen effluvium.”

These patients shed more than 100 resting hairs per day on their brush or in the shower. While this type of hair loss should correct itself with time, we usually check bloodwork to rule out other causes. Reassurance that it will resolve means a lot to our patients.

Stress caused exacerbations of inflammatory skin conditions like psoriasis and eczema.  Psoriasis erupts with red plaques and silvery scales, while eczema shows itchy plaques that keep people scratching, especially at night.

Great treatments exist like injectable biologic medicines and light therapy. Sometimes, eczema is the result of a topical allergy – we can perform allergic patch testing to see what the culprit could be.

The single most important prevention strategy for healthy skin moving forward is the use of a moisturizer with sunblock (containing a mineral like zinc oxide) daily in the morning to prevent the sun’s damaging effects, like wrinkles and skin cancer!
