Thompson Motor Services: A husband-and-wife legacy, family-operated for a century

by Tianna G. Hansen

Thompson Motor Services is far from your ordinary car repair shop.

Fully family-owned and operated for the past century, this local business has become a staple of the Penndel community since first opening in 1921. Anyone who knows the Thompson team can vouch they exceed in customer service, maintaining a community focus and never losing sight of helping get their friends and family back on the road safely.

First opened to the Penndel community in 1921 by two friends returning home from WWI, Thompson Motor Service has maintained their honest work ethic and integrity as a focal point of their business.

The first gas station on US Route 1 between Trenton, NJ and Philadelphia, Thompson Motor Service has become a foundation of the community. Anyone driving down the road will recognize the brick building, first built by George Thompson in 1921.

It has since been passed down through the family from George and Florence to Bob and Mary, then to Bruce and Beverly and now partnering with Len and Jennifer.

Bruce first began working at the shop after school, first-born son to his parents Bob and Mary. His degree in Diesel Mechanics helped grow the truck end of the business. He married Beverly in 1972, introduced through Thompson Motor Service.

Born in 1977, Len followed in the family footsteps and also worked as a teenager throughout high school and college at Thompson Motor Service. He would return to the family business in 2005, after graduating with a business degree, getting married and raising two sons, Michael and Owen. He partnered with his father, Bruce, as General Manager. At the time, Len’s mother Bev worked as secretary and helped run the shop.

Following Thompson tradition, Bruce and Bev now winter in FL and are semi-retired. Len’s wife, Jen, continues the husband-and-wife legacy by helping in the shop while Bruce and Bev are away. Recently, fifth-generation Mike (who just turned 17) has come to the shop to help his dad, carrying on the family tradition. His passion, like his father and grandfather, is in racing, though his love of the family business and mechanical objects may see him continue the family business in the future.

As Thompson Motor Service celebrates 100 years in business in the same location, the same work ethic and honesty prevail today as they did in 1921. This business is one of the oldest continuous businesses in Penndel, and enjoys serving the local community with its hardworking owners and employees, many having worked here for decades.

Thompson Motor Service has a loyal customer base who they consider friends as well as customers. Please visit them today, located at 34 W. Lincoln Highway, Penndel for any car repair needs.
