Employee of The Month Sheila swears that a basket of onions kept in her nail care and aesthetics room has prevented her from contracting illness for years. During the pandemic she faithfully keeps fresh onions throughout the Salon because onions are said to collect germs and viruses.
Intrigued by this claim, I looked into the history of this practice and according to Snopes, in 1919 when the flu killed 40 million people, a doctor making house calls came upon one farmstead where (to his surprise), everyone was healthy. When the doctor asked what the farmer was doing differently, the wife replied she had placed an unpeeled onion in a dish throughout the rooms of the home. The doctor asked if he could have one of the onions to place under a microscope. He found flu virus in the onion, leading him to theorize it absorbed the virus and kept the family healthy.
Fact of fiction?
According to verywellhealth.com: “Onions do not provide a good environment for bacteria or viruses to multiply or live. Even if an onion could draw or extract germs from someone (which is scientifically impossible), there’s nothing special about an onion that would kill these pathogens.”
What I do know is when Coronavirus exposure came knocking on our door, not one client or staff member got sick thanks to all of our protections (including the onions) and policies.
Sheila continues to maintain our onion population by buying and replacing them monthly. She disposes of old onions in the woods where we discovered they have sprouted and are yes, Blooming Onions!
