Adapting yoga techniques to breathe, move, and relax can benefit pregnancy and childbirth and helps lay the foundations for parenthood. Yoga meditation through sound, affirmations, intentions, and visualizations helps prepare partners emotionally for birth. Yoga asana (poses) practice can provide the support needed throughout all stages of pregnancy to empower women with the strength needed through birth and post-delivery. Incorporating appropriate pranayama (breathing) techniques also helps to increase mental focus, make the body to naturally release tension and ease discomfort, especially during contractions.
In children, yoga cultivates competencies in mind-body awareness, self-regulation, and physical fitness. By training our kids how to pay attention to the relationship between their mind and body, yoga helps them notice the impact of stress on their well-being. Yoga and meditation may help our youth manage their stress and mood to behave more positively and help them to calm themselves down and be less reactive in difficult situations. Having a practice of “mindfulness in motion”, yoga uses the body to promote awareness of the present moment in the poses being reflected.
