Grooming tips for dog owners

As seasons change, so does a dog’s coat. Whether your furry friend is short-coated or long, you’ll want to keep them freshly groomed.

At Animal Inn of Richboro, we recommend short-coated dogs have a professional bathing and nail clipping every three months or so.

We do nail clipping or filing (without a bath) by appointment, six days a week. During nail cutting, owners wait for your dog – we allow anxious owners to stay with your dog. The cost is $15-20.

Brush your furry friend weekly, using a soft brush or a “Furminator” tool on short coats.

We also recommend you wipe out their ears monthly with an ear cleaner. If you notice your dog’s ears are smelly or have black earwax, visit a vet.

Double-coated dogs need a professional bath, with a de-shedding shampoo at least twice a year (spring, fall).

A good bath and blow dry will remove old coat and reduce shedding (and this makes for less vacuuming!). Add a yummy facial, with our cucumber melon shampoo, for kissable faces!

For breeds that get haircuts, we recommend your dog have a professional groom every 6-10 weeks depending on breed.

Owner should brush and comb dog at least twice weekly, but should NOT bathe dogs themselves. Improper bathing techniques cause matting and sores.

(We are always willing to show owners proper brushing and combing techniques. We believe an informed owner is important).

If your dog gets wet, dry with a hair dryer while brushing and combing to remove matting. (A wet dog that is towel dried ends up matted).

Groomers can’t fix weeks of neglect in the time the dog is here. Imagine not brushing your own hair for six weeks and expecting your hairdresser to make you beautiful!
