BCTA outdoor programs offer fun, affordable, and safe tennis for all!

Given the inherent “social distancing” of playing tennis, the sport has enjoyed a national increase in players this past year as, according to the Physical Activity Councils Participation (PAC) report by Sports Marketing Surveys, four million more people played tennis in 2020 than in 2019. Locally, the game has been in high demand as well.

Except for just under three months during the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic, the Bucks County Tennis Association. Inc. (BCTA), kept people active, social, and healthy outdoors and indoors, and now outdoors again, by reducing its programs’ group sizes, adding more coaches to keep people safely separated, and implementing federal and state pandemic mandates.

This spring, the BCTA is managing an unprecedented demand for learning and playing the lifetime sport of tennis, and the association encourages people of all ages to get in the game for a variety of very good reasons:

*Tennis is an ideal social-distancing sport. The United States Tennis Association (USTA), with input from the USTA Medical Advisory Group, has established a series of recommendations and guidelines on how to play tennis safely for both players and facilities. Also, a recent study that analyzed the surface of balls used in various sports, showed that tennis balls used during normal play are unlikely to put players at risk of developing COVID-19.

*Tennis has numerous health benefits. One of the largest sport-specific studies to date published in the July 2020 edition of the Journal of Medicine and Science in Tennis, showed that people who play tennis have higher general, physical, social, and mental health scores than the general population.

Plus, BCTA programming provides tennis that is:

    • Accessible and affordable through the Bucks County public park system.
    • Sized right for kids with modified equipment and courts.
    • Developing young leaders and opening up opportunities for college scholarships.
    • A great family activity.
    • A great way to meet people.
    • A passion that can be enjoyed and shared for a lifetime!

The BCTA, a 501(c)3 nonprofit community tennis association, provides programs for the very beginner who may need one of the organization’s loaner racquets to the more competitive player looking for fun challenges. The BCTA is also looking for tennis enthusiasts desiring to give back to the game as coaches as well as high school students interested in on-court volunteer opportunities. Please contact the BCTA for more details.
