The importance of full tort automobile coverage

submitted by R. Tyler Tomlinson, Esq., Stark & Stark

You may have seen the classic commercials that state, “Injured in an auto accident and not sure where to turn?”

Sure, you can request a specific attorney to represent you, but the key to protecting yourself and your family starts well before any potential accident occurs.

Here are three tips to consider when selecting an auto insurance policy:

    1. Be sure you have enough coverage.

The amount you insure should protect all your assets – including your vehicle, home, and bank accounts. It is certainly reasonable to consider a $100,000/$300,000 policy at minimum.

    2. Choose the “Full Tort” and not the “Limited Tort” option.

Full Tort allows you to financially recover for pain and suffering.

Limited Tort will significantly reduce your ability to recover anything at all – even if someone else caused the accident.

The immediate savings of Limited Tort can seem appealing, but you will regret not having Full Tort coverage when you need it. Saving a few dollars a month will not outweigh the emotional and physical suffering of an accident.

    3. Purchase “UIM” (Underinsured Motorist) and “UM” (Uninsured Motorist) coverage. Unfortunately, many Pennsylvania residents do not purchase this coverage because it is optional and slightly increases the insurance premium.

It is an easy mistake to make, yet the UIM and UM coverages are probably the most important types of car insurance coverage in Pennsylvania.

Having UIM and UM coverage provides an additional layer of protection in the event of a car, truck, or pedestrian accident that results in serious injuries.

Essentially, this type of coverage protects you and the members of your household from the negligence and financial irresponsibility of other drivers on the road.

By taking these three simple steps when selecting your car insurance coverage, your auto insurance monthly premiums may cost a little more, but the benefits of this extra coverage will more than prove its value when you need it most.
