Gearing up for a big season at Snipes Farm in 2021

What do farming and education have in common in March at Snipes Farm? Each staff team is getting ready for a big season arriving soon!

Organic veggies and hunger relief: Seed orders, crop plans, caring for 120 egg-laying chickens and greenhouse prep keep farmers Victoria Lautsbaugh and Peter Crooke busy. They continue to tend beautiful salad greens in the greenhouse for Saturday Farm Markets on the farm throughout the winter.

Before we know it, seedlings will turn into overflowing greenhouses and fields for the 2021 Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program. CSA registration is now open; become a member and enjoy fresh, organic veggies weekly, June until November.

In 2020, 13,500 tons of food grown at Snipes Farm reached families in need to relieve hunger in our community. This vital work is needed now more than ever during the pandemic.

Outdoor education and summer camp: Brent Deisher and Melanie Douty-Snipes are thrilled to launch “Leading Empowered Action on Farm and Forest” (L.E.A.F.F) for homeschoolers and after school students this winter!

L.E.A.F.F students have tapped maple trees and boiled sap into syrup to enjoy with homemade pancakes, cared for animals, learned about winter ecology and built campfires for cooking.

And exciting plans are in the works for a spring eight-week program! Hands-on programming will continue as we head into the summer camp season.  There will be weekly Little Sprouts classes for pre-K families. Snipes Farm Day Camp for ages 6-11, the Camp Leadership Program for ages 12-14 and the Counselor-in-Training program for ages 15-17 will provide outdoor fun with friends on the farm!

Food, learning and community all spring from the land!
