Rain Date Set for Nov. 19; Closure to Allow for Installation of Additional Step Adjacent to Delaware Canal Towpath
The Centre Bridge-Stockton Toll-Supported Bridge’s staircase to the Delaware Canal towpath (PA side) is scheduled to be closed 7:00am to 7:00pm Wednesday, Nov. 18th, the Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission announced today.
The staircase closure will not affect motorists using the bridge’s travel lanes or pedestrians and bicyclists using the bridge’s pedestrian walkway.
The work involves the installation of a temporary form and the pouring and curing of concrete to create a bottom step at the towpath-side staircase entry point.
In the event of inclement weather, the work would be postponed to the following day — Thursday, Nov. 19th.
Bicyclists and pedestrians are advised to plan ahead and use the Lumberville-Raven Rock Toll-Supported Pedestrian Bridge to the north or the New Hope-Lambertville Toll-Supported Bridge’s walkway to the south as connection points for loop trips between the Delaware & Raritan Canal towpath in New Jersey and the Delaware Canal towpath in Pennsylvania.
As with any construction project of this nature, the work schedule and travel impacts are subject to change due to weather, emergencies and other considerations.
The Centre Bridge-Stockton Bridge connects the Centre Bridge section of Solebury Township, PA. with the Borough of Stockton, N.J. The 98-year-old steel Warren-truss bridge carried an average of 5,000 vehicles per day in 2019.
About the Commission
The Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission was formed by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the State of New Jersey in 1934 and its federal Compact was first approved by Congress in August 1935. The agency operates eight toll bridges and 12 toll-supported bridges, two of which are pedestrian-only spans. The Commission is a self-supporting public-service agency that receives neither federal nor state tax dollars to finance its projects or operations. Funding for the operations, maintenance and upkeep of its bridges and related transportation facilities is solely derived from revenues collected at its toll bridges. The Commission’s jurisdiction extends along the Delaware River from the Philadelphia-Bucks County line north to the New Jersey/New York border.
