Friends Home & Village – Newtown

Safe at home, not stuck at home

FHV residents see the benefits of community living, even during times of social distancing.

The joyful idea of living in an active senior community has become a source of fear for most these days.

Stories of fast-moving infection and suffering in isolation have flooded the media.  While these instances are far too frequent and tragic, for Friends Home & Village (FHV), what might have been a tale of devastating loss has been, instead, a success story.

To date, FHV has had zero cases of COVID-19 among its residents and staff.  Residents report feeling safe and satisfied, and the bond of community and care has grown stronger.

FHV’s leadership team credits this success to the diligence of its residents, the dedication of its staff, and their deep care and appreciation for one another. From the earliest stages of the pandemic, staff adjusted their schedules and roles to be sure first, that residents were safe, and second that their needs were met without further putting them in jeopardy. This meant continuing to provide services safely, while still ensuring quality and consistency.

This also came with an acute concern that social distancing could quickly turn to social isolation.  It therefore became imperative to residents and staff that their FHV family remain active and engaged.

Outdoor, socially distant activities quickly became the norm, and pages of puzzles, articles, and exercises were distributed with meals.  Residents began checking in with one another, via phone and e-mail, and started making good use of FHV’s outdoor sitting areas to socialize safely.

Indeed, the sense of community that is the very foundation of FHV’s vision has never been stronger. Said Friends Village resident, Maia Simon, “We moved in last October and immediately fell in love with the community – and it is the community that has mattered the most since the pandemic hit…We have had a much more satisfying social life here than we would have had at home…I have often said that I cannot imagine where I might have felt more comfortable or more safe than I have at Friends Village during this pandemic.”

Friends Home & Village is welcoming new residents in both their independent living cottages and personal care rooms, and is utilizing COVID screening steps to help ensure a safe move-in.
