What’s in a name?
When first starting out, all businesses look for a name that will have appeal and staying power.
Maybe it’s easy to say or it reminds one of a place, person or experience. So how did DELRAY get its name?
Delray Plus True Value and Delray Thriftway have been names associated with business in the New Hope/Lambertville area for over 40 years.
Actually, the hardware store which opened in 1999 was proceeded by Delray Thriftway Supermarket (the current location of Cornerstone gymnasium).
So where did the name DELRAY come from?
The answer is as simple as this: The owner of Delray Thriftway Supermarket which opened in 1980 was a Raymond DiCrescenzo, longtime resident and grocery store owner in Lambertville.
His wife, Adele, was also a well-known resident of Lambertville.
Ray’s dream was to open a supermarket.
So, Adele and Ray decided to take the chance and open a supermarket in New Hope.
When it came to creating a name for their new market, many ideas were kicked around.
After many exhausting hours at different names, the light bulb went on. Ray and Del looked at each other and smiled – they came up with DELRAY!
Simple, catchy and it rhymed with Thriftway.
DELRAY THRIFTWAY was born!
Almost 20 years later in 1999, the operators of the supermarket (who happened to be the sons-in-law of Del and Ray) had the opportunity to expand their retail operation and added on a hardware store.
Time for a new name.
Delray Supermarket was in full operation and it made perfect sense to expand on a successful name, hence DELRAY PLUS TRUE VALUE was born.
In 2000 Delray Thriftway was sold to the Clemens Supermarket chain. But the Delray name remained.
Twenty years later it is going strong as he DELRAY PLUS TRUE VALUE.
So, what’s in a name?
Well its fun to discover how names and places come to be.
But what is really important is what is associated with that name. DELRAY stands for customer service, convenience, knowledge, and quality.
Over 40 years the DELRAY’S owners and associates have tried to keep the name DELRAY synonymous with being a good neighbor – good friendly service.
