What you need to know about storm damage and the insurance process

Finding storm damage to your house can be a stressful time. Working with your insurance company to fix the damage can be overwhelming. If you haven’t been through it before then the all the questions can make your head spin.

Here are some tips to help manage the insurance claim process. It is important to know what your insurance policy covers prior to an event.

The insurance process can feel muddy or confusing. Insurance is purchased so that in times of need it is there to provide financial assistance.

Too often it feels like insurance companies only have their own interests in mind. If you don’t know what you’re covered for then you are at their mercy.

If you suspect damage to the exterior of your house it is always good to have a roofing and siding contractor and an insurance adjustor, come and evaluate the damage. Have a professional contractor involved and give you an advocate to discuss things with your insurance company.

The contractor can answer questions, provide documentation, or just explain things to both you and the insurance company. Another reason to have the contractor involved is because sometimes adjustors make mistakes.

Insurance companies send their adjustors to all types of claims, so they are usually looking at things from a policy basis. They don’t always know everything related to current codes, manufacturer requirements or material.

They often will exclude things because they haven’t dealt with a particular situation before. They are more likely to exclude it than research it.

Lastly, you determine which company will be doing the work for you. The insurance company has no say as to who you feel most comfortable doing the work.

Their only responsibility is to assess the damage and provide a monetary award to be applied to the repairs. For all of your roofing and siding needs, call C and C Family Roofing and Siding at 215-999-6248. www.roofdoc.com
