Liza Miller Ltd.: A world beyond European home and garden

by Tianna G. Hansen

Liza Miller Ltd. offers much more beyond a European home and garden store.

Settled in the artsy town of New Hope (adjacent to Peddler’s Village) since September 2017, they curate beautiful vintage European furniture, home goods, and more from dozens of villages in Hungary and Transylvania, providing Bucks County homes and businesses with gorgeous, unique pieces you can’t find elsewhere.

“There’s such a diverse range of homes in Bucks County,” says Ann Toll, Liza Miller’s owner. “Our pieces go so well with everything from the Bucks County farmhouse aesthetic to a more modern design scheme. Our hand-painted pieces from Transylvania, for instance, add the perfect pop of color for a home’s neutral palette.”

The Liza Miller team offers design services as well, visiting your home to curate the perfect pieces for your space.

The name of the shop comes from Ann’s grandmother. “She was a woman characterized by her warmth and style, and willing to help anyone in need,” says Ann. “So much of our store has to do with that heart and passion, and is reflected in what we bring to the community.”

Three times a year, when their container arrives across the ocean full of their finds from Europe, Liza Miller hosts container sales in a beautiful Doylestown barn which draw thousands of people. “We have been grateful to develop an amazing clientele throughout Bucks County, New York City, and beyond due to the uniqueness of our vintage pieces.”

Ann and friend Heather Law got the idea for the shop while traveling in Hungary and Transylvania, where they fell head over heels for the century-old grain sacks that farmers filled with grain and lugged to the local mill. “We loved their nubby, hand-woven texture, their colorful stripes, how they are lovingly hand-embroidered with a family’s initials, and the story each one told.”

From there, they extended their reach and gathered a beautiful selection of carefully curated vintage furniture, architecturals, garden items and linens that they shipped home to create Liza Miller.

Everything from a massive 1871 winepress, to wrought iron from Budapest estates, to rustic farm tables, to brightly painted benches and vintage cheese boards.

Liza Miller carries over 70 unique gift lines for women, men and baby.

They also have industrial pieces that provide a minimalist feeling for those seeking a sleek palette for their spaces.

“Our vintage industrial pieces offer home and commercial spaces an edgy, sleek and minimalist feel,” says Ann. “Each piece comes with history and has a story attached.”

That’s a major focus of their newest venture, UrbanBölt, which will launch later this year and offer vintage industrial lighting and furniture from Hungary and Transylvania.

These pieces are reclaimed directly from abandoned warehouses and factories in these regions that still have their hundred-year-old fixtures in place. “They add a completely different and authentic feel,” says Ann.

Liza Miller is also planning a home line, offering handmade down comforters from Hungary and a vast variety of European linens.

Liza Miller Home launches April 18th and will introduce this gorgeous line of goose down comforters and pillows, as well as bedding and a host of other beautiful home goods.

The launch weekend will feature food truck fun at the shop and over $2,000 in door prizes and giveaways.

Throughout it all, Liza Miller Ltd. is shining a spotlight on their “why”: the needs of abandoned children in the poor communities of Transylvania.

“Our shop helps support Firm Foundations Romania, an international volunteer program that ‘loves the unloved’ by holding, feeding, and caring for abandoned infants at a pediatric hospital in Brasov, Romania.”

They also sell homemade jam made by women in these communities who have no other outlet to make a living, and plan to sell more items like this in the store.

“It’s all about that outreach, trying to lead with the heart and passion and always helping others where we can.”

They’ve made a lot of friends in Romania as the business continues to grow and leads them on more exciting adventures. Ann and friend Heather Law travel back and forth all year to Hungary and Transylvania for buying trips and service trips to the orphanage and launched the “Getaway Girls” adventures when so many women from Bucks County and beyond asked for the chance to join them.

Their 2020 trips include an August Wine & Wellness trip to Budapest, a September couples trip to explore the Transylvanian countryside, an October trip volunteering at the orphanage and a December trip to Budapest’s incomparable Christmas markets.
