Griffin Shankin, of Solebury, at a bank in Frenchtown, NJ makes the first deposit into the "Haiti Needs Change" account, a fundraiser that he started.

Griffin Shankin wants change for Haiti's children

Griffin Shankin, age six of Solebury, lives very comfortably with his mom, dad and little sister. Recently he watched some of the horrific coverage on television of the earthquake in Haiti. He viewed a young boy sadly tell how he had lost both his mother and father in the quake. Griffin's eyes filled with tears as he pleaded, "Mom we have to help him. He has nothing and needs money. I will give him my change jar with all of my money. I want a bucket for the back of my bike so I can ride door to door to collect change to help him." Since then Griffin and his mom have organized a fundraiser for the children of Haiti, "HaitiNeedsChange.org." The money raised through collections of spare change will be given to the Real Hope For Haiti Rescue Center (http://www.haitirescuecenter.wordpress.com). Griffin's goal is to raise $5,000 over the next three months by placing collection jars in public settings throughout the New Hope/Lambertville/Solebury/Stockton areas. All of the money will be sent to directly to the rescue center. Griffin's charity for Haiti's children will also reach out to local area schools. Griffin will ask them to put out a large, clear collection container so that "change" can actually be seen growing. Again, 100% will be forwarded on directly to the Rescue Center. Donations can be made at any TD Bank branch (they have a penny arcade to count change). Mailed donations with checks should be made out to Haiti Needs Change c/o Maria Shankin can be sent to PO Box 322, Solebury, PA 18963.
