On May 25th, Doane Academy’s Spartan Engineering Club hosted its second annual Cardboard Boat Race on the Delaware River.
Teams of students raced one another in homemade boats made of only cardboard, glue and duct tape.
“Students have the opportunity to explore the concepts of basic physics and buoyancy while having fun,” said Mr. Michael Russell, Engineering Club Advisor and Math teacher. “It’s a good end of the year activity where we can take advantage of our proximity to the Delaware.”
Forty students and five faculty members took to the water under the Burlington-Bristol Bridge in their 13 cardboard contraptions.
They raced not only to win for time, but also to simply stay buoyant.
The boat race is just one of the club’s fun and educational events.
