Andrew Appleton receives commendation at Valley Forge Military College

Andrew Appleton Rep. Scott Petri (R-Bucks) recently congratulated Andrew Appleton, a 2011 graduate of Council Rock South, on being awarded the Cadet Commendation Ribbon by the president of Valley Forge Military Academy and College (VFMAC).

Andrew, the son of David and Ellen Appleton of Holland, received a scholarship to Valley Forge Military College through Petri’s office under the State Military College Legislative Appointment Initiative Program.

“The Cadet Commendation Ribbon is awarded to cadets who distinguish themselves by outstanding performance of duty – above and beyond the call of duty,” said Petri. “It is particularly heartwarming to know that a young man from our area, who excelled as a student at Council Rock South, is continuing to stand out and is distinguishing himself through his extraordinary efforts.”

In awarding Andrew his commendation, the president of VFMAC, Col. David R. Gray, credited Andrew for his “outstanding leadership and selfless service in training new cadets…Your pursuit of excellence is an inspiration to all,” Gray said.

The State Military College Legislative Appointment Initiative Program allows each member of the General Assembly to make an annual appointment of a qualified constituent to the Valley Forge Military Academy and College.  In addition to the two-year scholarship, appointed students are also nominated for the ROTC Early Commissioning Program (ECP), which will make them eligible to earn a commission in the U.S. Army as a second lieutenant in just two years instead of the usual four.

“This program provides qualified candidates with an opportunity to gain knowledge, confidence and leadership skills that will prepare them to transfer to a four-year college or university, a career in the U.S. Armed Forces or any of a number of other pursuits,” said Petri.

“Cadet Appleton has a very promising future and is setting an excellent example for the cadets that will follow him. I wish him well.”

Scott has rescheduled the meeting at the same location for Thursday, June 14th, at 7:00pm.

“As time goes on it is evident that the cuts outlined in the 2012-13 budget will depend largely on the revenue generated in the final months of this fiscal year,” said Scott.

“At this juncture, it makes sense to reschedule for a time when I will have a clearer sense of our state’s financial condition. In the meantime, if any of my constituents have questions concerning the proposed state budget, I will keep my website updated at www.RepPetri.com, and their calls and correspondence are always welcome,” Scott said.

Tax season presents opportunities to help Pennsylvania military families

Individuals filing their 2011 Pennsylvania personal income taxes can help the state’s military personnel and their families by donating part or all of their refund to the Military Family Relief Assistance Program, Rep. Scott Petri (R-Bucks) announced recently.

The program provides grants of up to $3,500 to Pennsylvania members of the armed forces and their families who have a direct and immediate financial need as a result of military service. The tax form includes instructions on how to donate. The grants have helped service members cover mortgage, utility, medical and other associated cost-of-living expenses.

Since the program began in 2006, nearly $1 million has been donated by individuals filing their Pennsylvania personal income tax returns.

Members of the armed forces who are residents of Pennsylvania are eligible to apply for assistance while they are serving on active duty for 30 or more consecutive days with the Army; Army Reserve; Navy; Navy Reserve; Air Force; Air Force Reserve; Marine Corps; Marine Corps Reserve; Coast Guard; Coast Guard Reserve; or the Pennsylvania Army or Air National Guard.

In addition, reserve component service members, including those in the Pennsylvania National Guard, and their families may be eligible for a grant for a period of up to one year after release from a qualifying tour of active duty. Certain family members of eligible servicemen and women who are Pennsylvania residents are also eligible to apply if applicants show their need for assistance is directly related to active military service.

Petri’s legislation signed into law

Rep. Scott Petri’s (R-Bucks) legislation to grant formal burials to veterans buried at Washington Crossing National Cemetery was signed into law recently by Gov. Tom Corbett.

“This legislation provides funeral benefits with a full military service for veterans in the southeast who are buried at Washington Crossing National Cemetery,” said Scott. “When someone is buried at a veterans cemetery – a national cemetery – he or she should be bestowed the respect and honor that a deceased serviceman or servicewoman deserves.”

House Bill 345 expands the authority of the Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA) to arrange for formal military burials at Washington Crossing, enabling veterans interned there to receive paid military honors. Formerly, these burial honors were only exercised in Pennsylvania at Fort Indiantown Gap in Lebanon County and National Cemetery of the Alleghenies in Washington County.

“This means a great deal to the men and women who proudly served this country and especially their families,” said Scott. “This honor is long overdue for our veterans in the southeastern part of the Commonwealth.”

PA Housing Finance Agency now offering foreclosure assistance

Rep. Scott Petri (R-Bucks) would like to inform residents that the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development is offering assistance for families facing foreclosure.

The Emergency Homeowners’ Loan Program, managed by the Pennsylvania Housing Finance Agency, is available for those who are delinquent on their mortgage payments. The Emergency Homeowners’ Loan Program will provide up to $50,000 for homeowners whose income is cut by 15% or more due to job loss, job reduction or medical expenses and are at least three months behind on their mortgage payments.

In order to be eligible to receive assistance, a homeowner must reside in the mortgaged property as his or her principal residence. The property must be a single-family residence in a one- to four-unit structure or condominium. Homeowners who remain in their homes for a number of years following the loan period may have all or part of the loan forgiven.

To apply for assistance, a homeowner must contact a Homeowners’ Emergency Mortgage Assistance Program (HEMAP) counseling agency to set up an appointment to fill out an application. This is a free service.

At the meeting, the homeowner should have his or her mortgage statement and/or delinquency notice showing record of at least three delinquent payments, the past three years of federal tax returns, and other documents.

Emergency mortgage assistance funding will be available until September 30th. For a complete list of information needed to apply for assistance and more information on the Emergency Homeowners’ Loan Program, call Petri’s district office at 215-364-3414 or visit RepPetri.com.
