PennDOT invites high school students to enter distracted driving PSA contest

Pennsylvania high school students are invited to enter a PennDOT contest aimed at discouraging distracted driving. Students can submit a 30-second radio public service announcement, or PSA, and the winning announcement will be professionally produced and sent to the student’s local media market.

“We hope students will use this contest as an opportunity to learn about the very real dangers of distracted driving and never take safety for granted,” said PennDOT Secretary Barry J. Schoch. “Developing and recording these PSAs is a great way for students to share this important message with their peers and even their parents.”

Distracted driving poses a serious safety risk to drivers of all ages, and particularly to relatively inexperienced drivers. According to PennDOT, in 2010 there were 14,294 crashes statewide involving drivers who were distracted or were using a hand-held cell phone. Approximately 37% of those crashes involved a driver who was 16- to 25-years-old.

2011 Buckingham Antique Auto Show a winner!

DO BUCK AUTO

by Kathleen Black

On Sunday, September 18th, the 2011 Buckingham Concours d’Elegance showcased 240 finely crafted automobiles at Holicong Park on Route 202 in Buckingham.

This is the 13th year that Ralph and Jan Tompkins, longtime residents of the township, and their loyal cadre of volunteers have organized this show, which benefits the Buckingham Land Preservation Fund. Ralph said the event came about “on a whim. We said ‘Why don’t we do a car show for land preservation?’”

According to a letter from the Buckingham Township Board of Supervisors printed in the front of the glossy, magazine-quality brochure for this event, “the shows have raised substantial sums, [and] they perform another invaluable service in reminding everyone of the pressing need to preserve farms and open space.”

The letter went on to say that, to date, “over 4,000 acres of Buckingham’s farms, fields, and woodlands [have] been preserved.”

This year, the festivities actually started Saturday evening with a pig roast. By Sunday morning, automobiles manufactured from the 1930′s on covered acres of ground at Holicong Park. Ed Camp from Richboro brought his 1979 Ford Ranchero to the show, and it is in showroom condition, “the way it came from the factory.” Ed explained that a Ranchero is a “pickup truck/car combo on a station wagon frame.”
