Details about Migratory Bird Marathon

Support our bird count. Help the center by supporting our Migratory Bird Marathon team. Each year during the month of May, our CNC team heads out to count bird species. The goal of the bird count is to tally the total number of species seen in a single 24-hour period during spring migration. In addition to providing valuable research data, our team raises funds to support the Churchville Nature Center. Our team is hoping to count 80 to 100 species. Pledge forms and more information are available at the center by calling (215) 357-4005.
Birders who wish to join the Migratory Bird Marathon team are welcome. Beginners and advanced birders are encourage to join the team. For more information on being a part of the count, contact CNC Director Chris Stieber at (215) 357-4005, or at cgstieber@co.bucks.pa.us.

Details about Basic Tandem Canoe Training

Learn the basics of canoeing. Learn how to handle a canoe so you can have fun on the water. You will have approximately 8 hours of instruction. The day will begin with some safety information and demonstration of paddle strokes, then you will start to practice what you have been shown paddling on the Harrisville Pond in the Pine Barrens of NJ. In most cases you will be paddling with an experienced paddler/coach. We then move onto a short section of the Wading River, where you will really use the skills introduced on the lake, paddling the twists and turns the river. You will get to paddle from both the bow and stern of a canoe. You will develop solid, fundamental skills that will allow you to go onto much more difficult water with practice. Even experienced paddlers will benefit from this class. This is a joint CNC and Appalachian Mountain Club course.
Pre-registration is required, and space is limited. Meeting Time: 7:00 AM in front of the canoe shed.
**Course & Canoe Use Fee: CNC & AMC Members $45 & Non-Members $55. Instructors: John Chalikian & Walt Underhill

Details about Southampton Community Band concert

On Saturday May 19th, the Southampton Community Band presents its concluding concert of the year. This program is the band’s traditional tribute to our Armed Forces. The concert begins at 8 PM at Klinger Middle School in Southampton. As a way of honoring our military personnel, all members of the armed forces, past or present, are admitted free to the program. "The band members and our community look forward to this concert with great joy and anticipation," said Charles Pinkow, general manager of the band. "It is rewarding to see so many veterans in attendance and it is a tradition we plan on continuing."

The band is welcoming a special guest narrator to the program. Mr. Steve Highsmith of PHL17/NBC 10 joins the band as narrator in a performance of Aaron Copland’s "Lincoln Portrait". This homage to Abraham Lincoln was completed in 1942 and first performed on May 14, 1942, almost exactly 70 years ago. Mr Highsmith is PHL17's Director of Community relations, host of PHL17's community affairs program "In Focus", host of NBC10@Issue as well as principal host for the Philadelphia Mummers Parade. "We are honored to have Mr. Highsmith’s involvement in what promises to be signature moment for our band and community", said Mr. Pinkow. Additional selections by the band will include a medley of music by George M. Cohan, Sousa’s "Sabre and Spurs", and "American Salute" (based on When Johnny Comes Marching Home). Tickets can be purchased at the door the evening of the concert. Adult tickets are $15; seniors and students are $10. For additional concert information call 215-355-3927
