submitted by Mike Mann, Stockton Borough Town Councilperson
A small but exceptionally lovely river town has recently enacted a plastic bag ban ordinance.
The measure was unanimously approved at the December Borough Council meeting.
It’s similar to other ordinances being passed in many progressive America municipalities, but it was done in the special “Stockton Way.”
Before the measure was brought up in council, it was discussed with each merchant in our town.
It wasn’t that difficult to do in our small town, but it is still great that every one of our shop owners agreed to work with us.
So our ordinance reads “In a spirit of positive cooperation, all enforcement will be done through positive rewards, education and encouragement minimally for the first year this ordinance is in effect.”
The education and encouragement component has been tasked to the Stockton Environmental Advocates, a recently formed community group.
The group is also discussing a measure to to end the use of plastic straws and Styrofoam containers in the community.
I believe that all of Stockton’s residents and merchants know how lucky they are to live in such a beautiful area where we can remain so easily connected to nature.
Located on the banks of the Delaware, we are not only stewards of our river but of our ocean as well.
Remember, “If you love America, you need to love our Earth as well”.
When you come to shop or visit us, please bring your reusable bags and make it easy for our shops to make the transition away from plastic waste.
