In 1887, when Chew Bittel Associates of Newtown started providing general contracting services to Bucks County families and businesses, Grover Cleveland was president and most of the county was farmland.
More than 130 years later, Chew Bittel continues to offer customers exceptional roofing and siding services for residential, commercial and historic properties along with other core exterior renovation options such as trim, windows, doors, gutters and spouts.
“Our company has been here since the 19th century and we are only the fourth ownership group during that entire time, now in the 21st century,” says the company’s vice president, Ed Herbst, IV, who co-owns the business with his business partner, Maria Herrera.
The new management team purchased Chew Bittel in June 2018 from Richard Shallcross, who owned it for 47 years.
“We are proud to carry on with Chew Bittel’s tradition of providing quality roofing and siding in the community. We also bring a significant amount of experience to the business. Maria, her husband and I have 60 years combined experience in this industry,” says Ed, who handles all of the estimating directly with the clients. In addition, the new ownership team has expanded Chew Bittel’s service area to the five county Philadelphia metropolitan region as well as Burlington, Huntingdon and Mercer counties.
The company has earned an excellent reputation for providing quality service and outstanding workmanship using the best manufacturers and adhering to strict attention to details on every project. “We have an in-house design team to help our customers throughout the process,” says Ed.
For residential roofing projects, Chew Bittel uses all major roofing and siding brands that provide an array of shingle styles, color palettes and textures that are aesthetically pleasing with excellent curb appeal. Homeowners are guaranteed that products are durable, watertight and energy efficient with 10 year transferable installation warranties to new owners.
Some of Chew Bittel’s suppliers include Atlas, Certain Teed, GAF, IKO, Owens Corning and Tamko.
For siding and siding accessories, Chew Bittel partners with the leading manufacturers for options in vinyl, fiber cement, wood, cedar and composites like fiberglass and PVC.
Siding and siding accessories are selected to not only beautify the home, but also to waterproof and prevent moisture damage.
“We install siding to make sure of its water and thermal integrity,” says Ed.
For metal roofing projects, Chew Bittel offers many options for colors and styles that are highly durable and economical with warranties ranging from 25 to 50 years.
Chew Bittel installs commercial roofing or flat roofs and siding using flat roof materials such as EPDM, TPO, fully reinforced elastomeric, PVC, fiberglass and self-adhered products.
For historic preservation projects, Chew Bittel has extensive experience with slate, cedar, wood siding, copper and tin roofing and metal accents. The installers use high tech products that can recreate the historic aspects of the home with low maintenance or maintenance free products such as synthetic slate or cedar, aluminum and steel standing seam roofs, composite wood and trim and much more.
“We’re an evolving industry and we always stay ahead of the curve trying new products and new technology on a regular basis,” says Ed.
Chew Bittel requires its highly skilled staff and subcontractors to undergo extensive training programs for not only installation procedures but also safety standards as mandated by federal government guidelines.
The company uses in-house staff for repairs or for homeowners or businesses experiencing emergencies
“We put great emphasis on training and certification, both in-house and factory training,” says Ed, who is certified in all aspects of the roofing and siding industry and is a professional member of the Roof Consulting Institute and the American Institute of Architects.
Chew Bittel is accredited by the Better Business Bureau and is a member of the International Code Council.
