Tranquility Dental Care: A patient’s oasis from fear and pain

by Joan Hellyer

Dr. Sergey Dedov and his wife, Dr. Nadya Dedov, are realizing their dream of owning their own dental practice – but the journey to making their life goal a reality has not been a smooth one.

Dr. Nadya Dedov has overcome challenges since being diagnosed with a blood disorder when she was five years old. She spent an entire summer on bed rest in an oncology unit at a hospital in her native Belarus.

“Going through something so traumatic as a child completely changes your life forever,” she said. Her health challenges, she said, motivated her to become a dentist so she can help people share their bright smiles with the world.

Dr. Sergey Dedov experienced a different challenge on the road to realizing his goals: He had to quickly learn the English language when he and his family emigrated from Ukraine to the United States. Learning English enabled him to secure his dental credentials from an advanced international program at the University of Michigan.

The Dedovs approach their recently opened Tranquility Dental Care practice in Lower Makefield with the same hard work ethic and commitment as they have in overcoming their challenges.

“We are not just dentists that go to work 9-5,” Dr. Nadya Dedov said. “We are extremely dedicated people to our profession and community because of our journey.”

The Dedovs bought the practice, formerly known as Smiles Today, in December. They renovated the facility at Makefield Executive Quarters and started treating patients earlier this year.

The patients are greeted with a calming mini-waterfall suspended against a wall at the entrance to the practice. There are no televisions blaring news reports or other programming throughout the dentist’s office.

Instead, the focus is on calm in an environment where the dentists work to connect with their patients to establish a deep level of trust.

“Our goal is to have an extraordinary practice. Patients need to come and have a relaxed time,” said Dr. Nadya Dedov. “We are skilled in helping people overcome their fear of dentists without sedatives.”

They use all the latest technology to address their patients’ needs. They offer a variety of services including family and cosmetic dentistry, veneers, smile makeovers, dental implants and emergency appointments.

Dr. Sergey Dedov splits his time between Tranquility and another practice in South Philadelphia. Dr. Nadya Dedov, who earned her dentistry degree from the University of Pittsburgh, works entirely at Tranquility.

The Dedovs live in Buckingham with their four-year-old son. Given Dr. Nadya Dedov’s health challenges early in life, the family is very dedicated to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee.

The dentists will mark the start of their new practice during April and May by offering 50 percent off office membership plans for new patients without dental insurance. They will host a grand opening celebration May 4.

But they are not waiting until then to get to work. The duo already is treating old Smiles Today patients and welcoming new patients seeking treatment.

“I explain to you how it will affect you,” Dr. Nadya Dedov said. “We want to provide high quality of care and will go above and beyond to help with your dental needs.”

It’s all part of living up to the practice’s motto of guiding patients on their “journey to smile.” When patients go to Tranquility, they can look forward to talking about more than just teeth.

“We always laugh and we always like to joke,” Dr. Nadya Dedov said. “My husband and I do it all the time, and our staff too, so we can put our patients at ease. Our practice philosophy is to be authentic, humble and brave to claim your happiness with a big smile. At the end of the day this is an ultimate goal in life-happiness.”
