The American Legion Auxiliary (ALA), Unit 210 Doylestown, is an organization consisting of women whose spouses, siblings, parents, children, or grandparents served or are serving in the military during periods of conflict.
This year, the Auxiliary and American Legion are both celebrating their 100th anniversaries.
In the spirit of their motto, Service Not Self, the mission of the American Legion Auxiliary is to support the American Legion and to honor the sacrifice of those who serve by enhancing the lives of veterans, military, and their families, both at home and abroad.
For God and Country, they advocate for veterans, educate citizens, mentor youth, and promote patriotism, good citizenship, peace and security.
The Auxiliary’s fundraising events have raised money to support the Liberty USO, Philadelphia, Philadelphia Project Home, Tails of Valor, Wreaths Across America (in which we also participated in the ceremonies and wreath-laying), support for the 103rd Engineer Battalion HHC out of Fort Mifflin, The Santa Fund for Veterans in VA Hospitals throughout Pennsylvania, and the local Give a Christmas Fund.
They also sponsor scholarships for young women who are members of the Junior classes in local high schools to allow them to attend Keystone Girls State in Harrisburg each summer.
Girls attending participate in a weeklong, simulated government immersive learning experience. They assume roles in fictional “National” and “Federal” political parties and run for and hold offices that mirror Pennsylvania elected offices, and so learn about the legislative process and parliamentary procedures. Girls attending are also eligible to apply to attend the National Girls State event.
This year, the ALA are also sponsoring an Americanism essay contest for students in grades three to 12 entitled, “How can we address and prevent veteran homelessness in our community?” Winning essays will receive cash prizes and be eligible for entry into the State and National contest.
The Unit also presented a gift basket to the first baby born at Doylestown Hospital in the New Year.
They are ever-present at Doylestown’s annual Memorial Day parade, handing out flags and selling “poppies for remembrance” as part of their fundraising for veterans’ causes.
Their fundraising events include Dine and Donate nights at restaurants and an annual Valentines Day Dinner Dance with live music at the Legion Hall.
They meet the third Sunday of every month, from September to June, at the American Legion Hall, 315 North Street, Doylestown, at 1:00pm.
