Motorcycle ride to kick off Toys for Tots donation drive

It may be a bit early for Old St. Nick, but as of October 1st, the Glenside Chapter of Toys for Tots – which provides toys to more than 1,000 families annually in lower western Bucks and eastern Montgomery counties – is officially in full swing.

Guy Vogel, assistant coordinator for the local Toys for Tots, which operates out of a warehouse on Gibraltar Road in Horsham Township, said he needs all the help he can get.

“Our shelves aren’t even stocked yet,” Guy said. “I’ve had nobody coming in. It’s been very slow going.”

In addition to extra helping hands, Guy is also in need of new, unwrapped toys to fill requests that will begin pouring in soon.

“We want people to come to us because they can’t afford Christmas,” Guy said. “We don’t discriminate. We don’t ask you your income. I don’t want you to go into debt over the holidays if you can come to us for help.”

The organization will be the beneficiary of toys and possibly cash donations courtesy of a second annual motorcycle ride on October 21st. Organized by John Davis, of Horsham, the ride begins at 11:00am at Hannum’s Harley-Davidson in Sellersville, and ends with lunch at Bikes Built Better, 133 Horsham Road in Horsham.

“There’s no way of knowing how many will come out,” John said, adding that he’s hoping for good weather. “I was surprised last year that we had something like 30 bikers show up and a couple of cars.”

Riders can register beginning at 10:00am on October 21st.

Cost to participate is either $10 or one unwrapped toy.

Horsham Police will again escort ride participants to ensure that the entire group remains together for the ride.

Davis, a Navy veteran and Patriot Guard Rider, has been involved with Toys for Tots since 2006.

Formerly of Delaware, John participated annually in a 30-mile motorcycle toy drive in Ocean City, MD.

When he relocated to the greater Philadelphia area, John looked to get involved with a ride here, but discovered a similar ride did not exist.

So, last year he started the ride, which he hopes will be even bigger for 2018.

Registration begins at 10:00am on October 21st at Hannum’s Harley-Davidson, 3255 State Street, in Sellersville.
