Teens are heard with the help of New Hope Solebury Cares

“There I was, a sophomore in high school, talking with my local representative’s staffers about the ongoing importance of adults using their power and ability to protect our youth from drugs and alcohol,” commented Becca Wilson. “That day, all of us, from our group, TODAY, had an opportunity to be heard not only in Bucks County but also in Washington DC.”

Becca’s comments refer to meetings she participated in with the offices of Congressman Brian Fitzpatrick, Senator Pat Toomey, and Senator Bob Casey last February, while attending the National Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America Conference, as a representative of Teen Organization Developing Active Youth (TODAY).

New Hope-Solebury Cares (NHSC,) an organization dedicated to helping individuals and families thrive, brought students from TODAY (NHSC’s newly formed Youth Advisory Council) to DC as a way for young people to speak out about the issues that matter most to them and their community.

Youth deserve the opportunity to shape their community for the better and New Hope Solebury Cares is providing these students with that opportunity.

Through TODAY, students are given the chance to manage events, gain leadership experience, attend conferences, fundraise, advocate, mentor, and be mentored.

Zachary Mahon, NHSC Project Coordinator, described their efforts in this way, “Our tagline at New Hope Solebury Cares is ‘Thriving Together’. We envision a community in which all individuals and families thrive. Our vision is only possible when all individuals in our community work towards accomplishing it and that means not only engaging youth with our programs but actually letting them lead the way.”

It is clear that NHSC is tethered to youth and education.

It is, however, just one part of this prevention-driven, community-wide coalition open to everyone.
