Newtown Historic Association, Inc.

The Newtown Historic Association (NHA), incorporated in 1964, is an organization dedicated to the preservation of Newtown’s heritage.

The group of over 250 members meets at the Half Moon Inn (Court Inn) on the third Monday almost each month.

Each year in October NHA hosts Market Day, a festival of colonial crafts, as well as a Holiday Open House Tour, an exclusive tour through many private local homes and historic buildings the first Saturday in December. Other events are sponsored throughout the year, including a special lecture series.

NHA also maintains a Research Center and Barnsley Room of Newtown History, which is open to the public on Tuesdays from 9:00am to 3:00pm, Thursdays from 7:00pm to 9:00pm, and by appointment.

The Research Center is a repository of records focusing on Newtown history from its founding to present time.

The collection includes deeds, wills, diaries, photographs, directories, inventories and maps dealing with Newtown people, land, houses, farms, schools, service organizations, and many other topics of interest.

The collections are of particular value to persons interested in genealogical information of former Newtown residents, and the maps and deeds are of assistance to those studying land history or dating historic houses in the Newtown area.

The Half Moon Inn, located at 105 Court Street, has served as the headquarters of the NHA since 1962 and is on the National Register of Historic Places.

For more information on the NHA, see the schedule of events or visit their website at www.newtownhistoric.org to become a member.
