Doylestown Health opens new Urgent Care center

by Maryanna S. Phinn

Doylestown Health Urgent Care, an extension of the Doylestown Health system, opened in September to provide patients of all ages with another option for treatment of common illnesses, injuries or medical problems. Doylestown Health Urgent Care offers people who live, work or attend school in the community access to state-of-the-art medical care for urgent problems that should not wait, such as a broken bone or suture, or for medical care that is usually not provided in a primary care office, but does not require the level of care provided in the Emergency Room.

Patients seeking treatment for many medical conditions can find fast and cost-effective relief at Urgent Care.

The medical team treats common health problems such as the flu, coughs and colds, fever, stomach virus, asthma, bronchitis, allergies, cuts, abrasions, sprains, broken bones or other minor injuries.

“What makes our model different than other urgent care facilities is we bridge the gap between primary care and the Emergency Room in a setting that is fully integrated in the Doylestown Health network,” explains Donald P. Talenti, M.D., the practice’s medical director who is board-certified in internal medicine and pediatrics.

Prior to joining the medical staff at Doylestown Health, Dr. Talenti served as medical director of Penn State Hershey/Carlisle Regional Medical Center’s Emergency Department.

Many free-standing urgent care centers are not connected to a health network. “Patients receive episodic care rather than longitudinal care. They are left on their own to see their family doctor or find a specialist after being treated. As an integrated part of Doylestown Health, we help coordinate follow-up care which not only improves outcomes for our patients but it’s also more efficient for our health care providers,” Dr. Talenti says.

“Communication with our patients’ primary care providers is extremely important to us. We send their family doctor a report about their visit. We also make recommendations for follow-up care, if needed. We provide high-tech care with a personal touch and treat everyone like family. When patients are seen here, they are not just part of an assembly line.”

Patients are treated in a comfortable and spacious newly renovated facility which includes five examination rooms and on-site X-ray, laboratory and pharmacy.

In addition, patients have immediate access to tests or treatments frequently required such as blood tests, common prescription medications, lab work or sutures.

All X-rays are read by board-certified Doylestown Health radiologists.

“At Urgent Care, we have full access to Doylestown Health’s electronic medical records so we can immediately document the visit and arrange for follow-up with the patient’s primary care provider or the appropriate specialist within our network. If someone does not have a primary care doctor, we can refer that person to one of our physicians.” Doylestown Health offers patients access to more than 435 medical staff in over 50 specialties.

“We close the loop by providing a seamless integrated model of care. This continuity of care benefits our patients and Doylestown Health’s primary care and emergency room doctors and other specialists. We offer patients immediate access and treatment if someone needs to be seen after regular office hours or who doesn’t need advanced care provided in the Emergency Room. We also welcome patients who walk-in and do not have an affiliation with Doylestown Health,” he adds.

In addition to routine medical care, Doylestown Health Urgent Care also offers small and mid-sized businesses or large corporations Occupational Health Services such as pre-employment physicals, drug and alcohol screenings, tuberculosis screening, vaccinations and workman’s compensation physicals.
