Rheumatology Specialty Center adds practice in Langhorne

    by Maryanna S. Phinn

Rheumatology Specialty Center, the largest regional multi-center practice dedicated to caring for patients specifically with rheumatic diseases, opened a fourth outpatient practice in Langhorne in July. Rheumatology Specialty Center also serves patients at three other locations including its main office in Willow Grove, and in Doylestown and Huntingdon Valley.

“We’ve been in practice for more than 45 years in the Philadelphia area,” says Dennis Jerdan, M.D., M.B.A., a rheumatologist who cares for patients at each location and serves as managing business partner. “In recent years, we had several doctors reach out to us about opening another location in the Langhorne-Newtown area so patients living or working nearby didn’t have to commute to Doylestown, Willow Grove or Huntingdon Valley. We’ve been extremely busy since we opened in early July. We are very pleased,” he says.

Rheumatology Specialty Center treats and cares for patients specifically with rheumatic, autoimmune and musculoskeletal diseases such as: *Osteoarthritis (degenerative joint disease); *Rheumatoid arthritis; *Ankylosing Spondylitis; *Gout and other crystal diseases; *Lupus (systemic lupus erythematosis or SLE); *Myositis; *Osteoporosis; *Psoriatic arthritis; *Sarcoidosis; *Sjögren’s Syndrome; *Tendonitis.

“We have a wide and diverse patient population,” Dr. Jerdan says. “For example, we’ll see young women in their late teens or twenties who have lupus, or we care for other people with rheumatoid arthritis or older folks with osteoarthritis. Rheumatology is a great specialty because we have the opportunity to care for people across the entire spectrum and in every age group and demographic.”

Most of the diseases treated cause inflammation, pain and joint damage and sometimes lead to disability. Every patient receives compassionate, personalized care designed specifically to their personal needs and lifestyle.

At Rheumatology Specialty Center, patients have the convenience of receiving most services in one place.

The Langhorne practice offers a highly specialized and non-surgical approach to treatment and care including outpatient infusion therapy. Rheumatic and autoimmune diseases often require advanced infusion therapy as part of the comprehensive treatment plan.

All FDA-approved infusion therapies for rheumatologic illnesses are available at the infusion center at Langhorne and the other three locations.

“We offer an alternative to surgery because many of these diseases can be managed and treated medically which is the approach we take with our patients,” Dr. Jerdan says.

In addition, the new practice offers advanced services such as musculoskeletal ultrasound guided injection therapy to assess, diagnose or treat problems related to swelling, inflammation, joint damage or disease progression.

The Langhorne practice also offers XIAFLEX®, the only FDA-approved non-surgical treatment for adults with Dupuytren’s contracture, a condition that causes abnormal thickening in the palm of the hand.

Rheumatology Specialty Center is affiliated with Drexel University College of Medicine. “We frequently teach and instruct rheumatology fellows who rotate through our practice. We also teach medical students and residents from Abington Hospital and residents from Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine,” Dr. Jerdan says.

Most of Rheumatology Specialty Center’s staff is available for appointments at all four locations. The staff includes 10 board-certified rheumatologists, two nurse practitioners and one physician assistant.

Rheumatology Specialty Center’s Langhorne practice is located at One Summit Square, 1717 Langhorne-Newtown Road, Suite 101 in Langhorne. Office hours are Monday through Friday from 7:45am to 4:45pm. To make an appointment, refer a patient or learn more, visit www.arthritispa.com or call 215-657-6776.
